The truth behind what a balanced day really looks like.
The food pyramid you grew up with is a lie.
It wasn't even a "new studies have shown different data" mistake. It was an outright lie, influenced by dairy and corn lobbyists.
This has led to the continued beliefs of many that fat is bad, breakfast cereal is the most important meal of the day, and you should be eating just as much cheese as you do chicken.
Instead, let's change those misconceptions with new ideas about food.
1. Fruits and vegetables are amazing, especially in whole form, and are hard to overconsume (this does not include juice, however).
2. Unsaturated fat is a vital part of your diet. You get this mainly from plant sources, such as nuts, avocados, and seeds, as well as fish. Saturated fats can be ok, too, just in much smaller amounts.
3. Protein will not make you bulky. Eat more lean meat and fish than you do beef and pork to avoid excess saturated fat.
4. Carbs will not make you fat, but eating large bowls of pasta might not help. Portion sizes are usually more important than total nutrient or food group avoidance.
5. Dairy can be fine for some people, and make others sick. Go with what works best for you. Just keep in mind it's often both a good source of protein and micronutrients, and a large source of saturated fat.
6. Drink mostly water. Because that's not on here.
I would like to applaud the only thing they got right here- added sugars should be kept to a minimum.
